Aid workers to return to Yemen at weekend but no aid yet

  • Arab world’s richest nation Saudi Arabia commits genocide on the Arab world’s poorest country Yemen

The White House welcomed in a statement to the coalition the initiative led by Saudi Arabia to reopen the port of Hodeidah and Sanaa International Airport to allow humanitarian aid to enter Yemen.

"First plane landed in Sanaa this morning with humanitarian aid workers", Abeer Etefa, WFP regional spokeswoman told Reuters in an email on Saturday.

Yemen is highly dependent on imported wheat for its basic needs, and aid groups have warned that humanitarian deliveries cover only a small portion of the need.

Three other aircraft, two carrying United Nations aid workers and another carrying Red Cross staff, also landed at the airport in the capital city Sanaa.

Aid shipments of food and medicines to the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida continue to be blocked by the coalition.

Unicef, the UN's children's fund, said its flight was carrying 15 tonnes, or 1.9 million doses, of vaccines for diphtheria, tetanus and other diseases.

About 7 million people in Yemen, out of a population of 27 million, depend entirely on food aid, and 4 million rely on aid groups for clean water.

Officials at the port said on Saturday that no ships have arrived yet and they were not expecting any to dock soon.

It follows a three-week long blockade of aid supplies by Saudi Arabia, put in place after a rebel rocket attack on the Saudi capital Riyadh.

The U.S. -backed coalition closed air, land and sea access on November 6, in a move it said was to stop the flow of arms to the Houthis from Iran. Iran has denied supplying weapons.

The remarks came as Yemen's defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for almost three years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

The United States called on the worldwide community to take the necessary steps to "hold the Iranian regime accountable for its repeated violations of United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2216 (adopted in 2015) and UN resolution 2231 as the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps exploits the grave humanitarian crisis in Yemen to advance its regional ambitions".

The coalition fighting the armed Houthi movement in Yemen said on Wednesday it would allow aid in through the Red Sea ports of Hodeidah and Salif, as well as United Nations flights to Sanaa, more than two weeks after blockading the country.

The coalition joined the Yemen war in March 2015, after the Houthis forced President Abed-Rabbo Mansour Hadi and his government to flee their temporary headquarters in the southern port city of Aden into exile in Saudi Arabia.
