Rather than a behemoth series of three 3-hour films however, the new Amazon project will be a television series. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series, Amazon said Monday. "Sharon and the team at Amazon Studios have exceptional ideas to bring to the screen previously unexplored stories based on J.R.R. Tolkien's original writings".
While The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are Tolkien's most famous stories, he has many other works detailing the history of Middle Earth. Starz's American Gods, MTV's (now Spike's and soon to be Paramount Network's) The Shannara Chronicles, and Syfy's The Magicians-all also based on popular fantasy-book series-have proven to be expensive shows with an even smaller fraction of the enthusiastic Thrones audience.
The Lord of the Rings canon was named Amazon customers' favourite book of the millennium in 1999. If you're familiar with the extended universe, you'll know this likely means an adaptation of "The Silmarillion", where Tolkien documented pretty much everything you've never thought you wanted to know about Middle Earth.
Given that Peter Jackson'sLord of the Rings trilogy won a combined 17 Oscars and, when you throw in the three Hobbit movies, grossed almost $6 billion worldwide, you would think that the entertainment industry might be inclined to leave it way-more-than-well-enough alone.
What the series does have, however, is an eye-popping price tag, with Deadline reporting that the rights for the franchise alone cost in the $200 to $250 million range - and that's before any production costs or cast salaries are factored in.
