If Tuesday night is a precursor for the future, expect more LGBTQ people to run for office - and win handily.

Danica Roem defeated incumbent Bob Marshall in the race for Virginia's 13th District House of Delegates seat, becoming the state's first openly transgender elected official. Bob Marshall, one of Virginia's longest-serving and most socially conservative lawmakers. In January 2017, Marshall proposed legislation regulating access to bathrooms for transgender individuals similar to a controversial North Carolina law. The Washington Post reports that Danica Roem, a 33-year-old Democratic candidate whose résumé includes journalism experience as well as the lead-singer position in the metal band Cab Ride Home, has unseated 25-year incumbent Robert G. Marshall after a deeply personal campaign that was treated as a referendum on everything from local traffic to national gender norms.

Marshall, author of Virginia's "bathroom bill", a measure that would have restricted the bathrooms transgender people can use, thanked his longtime supporters in a statement on Facebook. Roem asked Noisey in the midst of her campaign.

"No matter what you look like, where you come from, how you worship or who you love, if you have good public policy ideas, if you're qualified for office, you have every right to bring your ideas to the table", she said.

Christy Holstege, a bisexual woman, won the other open seat, making the city council now entirely composed of members of the LGBTQ community, according to Equality California.

Bhalla, who had served in the Hoboken City Council for two terms was backed by the city's mayor Dawn Zimmer, who decided not to seek another term.

Althea Garrison, elected in MA, was the first openly transgender person to serve in a state legislature, but did not campaign as an openly transgender person during her race in 1992.

The election results on Tuesday night are significant.

Jenny Durkan, who was the first openly gay U.S. Attorney, is poised to become Seattle's first female mayor since 1926.

Melvin Carter III was elected St. Paul's first mayor of color. Vi Lyles became the first African-American woman elected mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina.
