  • Disneyland guests, 1 worker contracted Legionnaires' disease

Health officials are investigating 12 cases of Legionnaires' disease traced to Anaheim, California, including nine cases among visitors to Disneyland in September.

Orange County has had more than 55 reported cases of Legionnaires' disease this year and the number of cases has increased in recent years both in the county and nationally, according to the health care agency.

One of the three cases of the respiratory illness not linked to Disneyland was fatal in an individual who had additional health issues, said Jessica Good of the Orange County Health Care Agency.

Disneyland has shut down two cooling towers after people who visited the Anaheim theme park came down with Legionnaires' disease. By the end of October, Disneyland learned of the cases.

According to a LA Times report, Disney reported on November 3 that routine testing had detected elevated levels of Legionella in two cooling towers a month earlier, and the towers had been disinfected. One patient, who hadn't visited the park, has died.

Case ages range from 52-94. The towers are not in public areas.

"We conducted a review and learned that two cooling towers had elevated levels of Legionella bacteria", said Dr. Hymel in a statement. Disney took the towers out of service on November 1, performed more testing and disinfection, and brought them back into service on November 5.

Hymel said that local health officials had assured them that there was no longer any risk to guests or employees of the park.

OCHCA said the Legionnaires' disease exposure period in Anaheim was September 12-27.

According to Legionella.org, "Legionnaires' disease is a severe, often lethal, form of pneumonia".

The type of pneumonia was named Legionnaires' disease after an outbreak of pneumonia caused 34 deaths at a 1976 American Legion Convention in Philadelphia in 1976. It is not contagious from person to person.

Symptoms develop two to 10 days after exposure, the OCHCA said, and include fever, chills, cough, muscle aches, and headaches.
