  • Microsoft and SAP both commit to running SAP HANA on Azure internally

Expanding on their existing strategic partnership, Microsoft will soon be offer SAP's private managed cloud offering, SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, on the Azure cloud computing platform. The companies will deploy each other's cloud solutions internally, and encourage joint support services to run SAP software on Azure cloud services. Microsoft will deploy SAP S/4HANA on Azure to run its internal finance processes, and SAP will move its key internal business critical systems to Azure, according to a press release.

"As technology transforms every business and every industry, organizations are looking for the right platforms and trusted partners to help accelerate their digital transformation", Microsoft Chief Executive Satya Nadella said in a news release. Indeed, Microsoft announced as far back as 2014 it was working to certify some of SAP's core business applications on its cloud. "Together, we will help companies win the customer-driven growth revolution".

Microsoft and SAP's announcement has already received support from a number of large businesses including Coca-Cola, Costco and Columbia. Additionally, SAP agreed to run its HANA in-memory database on Azure.

Earlier this year, SAP announced its customers could use AWS, Azure (in public preview form) or a demo of Google Cloud to run SAP HANA and other SAP services. Both companies will document their projects so they can share their application deployment experiences with customers. Microsoft customers will benefit from high-quality location data from TomTom's unique global community and its global partner network, whose users continually provide active and passive map and traffic data insights.

At AutoMobility LA™ Cubic Telecom will demonstrate how its data analytics solution powered by Azure Location Based Services will help city planners, automotive OEMs and third parties to more effectively manage Electrical Vehicle (EV) charging station locations, occupancy rates and overall efficiency of the infrastructure. This step is a part of their plans of producing cloud based products together for the mutual customers.

"We chose to partner with Microsoft because it has expertise in scaling globally with enterprise customers and shares a joint vision with TomTom to make location a fundamental aspect of the cloud", said Anders Truelsen, managing director of BU Licensing at TomTom. However, he warned that Microsoft and SAP still need to show they can deliver on customer traction, value and success.

The companies also said they're using each other's products.
