  • A grey plume began coming out from Mount Agung on Tuesday afternoon

Singaporeans should defer non-essential travel to areas of Bali affected by the eruption of Mount Agung, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said on Wednesday (Nov 22).

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport remains open and flights are operating as scheduled, but that could change if ash enters the flight path.

The last time this volcano erupted was in 1963, which lead to the death of over 1,500 people.

"You should also be ready to evacuate at short notice", it added.

Indonesia is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, and area of high volcanic and quake activity due to active tectonic plates beneath the earth's surface.

The disaster agency recommended against any activity within 6-7.5 km (3.7-4.6 miles) of the crater.

There is now an evacuation zone around the volcano, which stretches between six to 7.5km from the summit.

Evacuees stay at an emergency shelter in Klungkung, Bali, Indonesia, after the start of eruption of Mount Agung on Tuesday, with an ash cloud rising 700 metres above the summit.

"People are encouraged to remain calm".

At one stage, after authorities put Agung's alert status at the highest level of four in September, more than 130,000 people left their homes.

In 2010 Mount Merapi, considered one of the most active and risky volcanoes in the world, erupted and killed more than 300 people and forced 280,000 people to flee.

Officials estimated recent fears over Mount Agung's eruption have cost Bali at least $110 million in lost tourism and productivity, as many local residents moved to shelters.

It is unknown how long the volcano may erupt for and it is even possible that the activity is the last that will be seen for some time.
