The attack started when an explosive went off in a building adjacent to the mosque, and gunmen fired at worshippers as they fled, eyewitnesses told CNN. Some 125 more were injured in the attack - one of the deadliest in Egypt's history.

An Egyptian television channel reported that President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will meet with security officials later today to discuss the attack.

The president further promised that Egypt's army and policemen will shortly reestablish control and security, asserting, "we will respond to this terrorist attack vigorously". Some 109 others were injured, Egyptian state media reported.

It comes weeks after a major militant attack on Egyptian soldiers in Sinai.

No one has claimed responsibility, but the strike bears the hallmarks of an attack by ISIS.

"Justice will be served against all those who participated, contributed, supported, funded, or instigated this cowardly attack", Sisi said in a statement. The affiliate also is believed to have been behind the 2016 downing of a Russian passenger jet that killed 226 people.

"These attacks on people praying in mosques and churches only strengthen our determination to stand together, & defeat terrorism & hate", Casson wrote on his Twitter.
