  • Trump bills latest HHS pick as “star for lower drug prices”

Azar's nomination comes a little more than a month after the resignation of HHS Secretary Tom Price.

President Donald Trump has nominated onetime Deputy Secretary of Health and Human Services and former president of the USA division of pharmaceuticals giant Eli Lilly and Company Alex M. Azar II for his new Secretary of HHS.

The nomination comes after former HHS Secretary and Georgia Congressman Tom Price resigned following allegations he had spent at least $400,000 in travel bills for chartered flights. We need an HHS secretary who is willing to take on the greed of the pharmaceutical industry and lower prescription drug prices, not one who has financially benefitted from this greed.

The American Hospital Association said it welcomed the news and was encouraged by Azar's experience in both the public and private sectors. He became head of Lilly's US operations in 2012 and served in that role until he left the company this January. Trump wrote on Twitter.

"As Mr. Azar navigates the confirmation process, HIMSS expects to work closely with him and the HHS team to ensure that health information and technology remain vital enablers of healthcare transformation", said HIMMS in a statement posted on their website.

President Donald Trump tweeted Monday that his nominee for HHS secretary, Alex Azar will "be a star for ... lower drug prices!"

If confirmed, Azar will oversee the National Institute of Health, the CDC, the FDA and other agencies.

Azar also drew praise from PhRMA, the largest pharmaceutical industry trade group and America's Health Insurance Plans, the key lobbyist for the insurer industry.

Senate Health Committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said Azar has qualifications and experience to get results and he will quickly schedule a hearing on his nomination.

As head of HHS, Azar would have oversight responsibility for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which regulates the drug industry including approving new treatments.
