The Islamic Military Counter Terrorism Coalition met in Riyadh with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the Saudi defence minister.

Defence ministers from 40 Muslim-majority countries have gathered in Saudi Arabia to launch a military coalition aimed at fighting terrorism both in its "ideology and in its violence".

An official statement issued on the eve of the event said that the "pan-Islamic coalition" of 41 Muslim countries would coordinate and multiply their individual efforts in the global fight against terrorism and violent extremism.

"This ends today, with this alliance".

The alliance was formed in 2015 under the leadership of Prince Mohammed, whose heir to the throne in June had shaken the political scene across the region.

The coalition's new website said its main goal "is to increase co-operation between Islamic countries on the combating the financing of terrorism and to counter radical Islamic ideology".

Today's meeting coincides with an escalation in tensions between Saudi and Iran, particularly over wars in Syria and Yemen and the political structure of multi-confessional Lebanon.

Saudi Arabia accuses Iran of supporting armed groups across the Middle East, including Lebanon's Shiite Hezbollah and Yemen's Huthi rebels.

The countries in the Islamic Alliance include Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Afghanistan, Uganda, Somalia, Mauritania, Lebanon, Yemen, Turkey and Libya.

Ali, who said that Nigeria has made remarkable progress in the area of counter-terrorism since the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari also added that the efforts of neighbouring countries with similar issues like Chad, Niger and Cameroun, are yielding positive results.

The Saudi Crown Prince offered condolences to Egypt over a deadly mosque attack in the Sinai Peninsula on Friday, in which 305 people were killed and scores injured.

He vowed to stop terrorist groups from distorting the true image of Islam and its values.

Although there is no official confirmation, sources said that Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi would also visit the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on November 27, and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa is likely to accompany him.
