  • Signals were false hope for Argentine Sub

The navy said it had not had contact with the submarine, the San Juan, for 48 hours.

Satellite signals heard over the weekend did not come from a missing Argentine Navy submarine San Juan that went missing on November 15, dashing hopes that the vessel could be located.

In the first confirmation of a malfunction, an Argentine navy official said earlier Monday that the submarine reported a battery failure Wednesday and was returning to base when it went missing.

A U.S. Navy official familiar with the search cautioned that it was unclear whether the Argentines described the sound as something similar to tools being banged against the hull of a submarine as was previously reported.

The second rescue system and supporting equipment will be transported using additional flights, and is scheduled to arrive in Argentina next week, the navy said in a statement.

Mr Gonzalez added that the search for the vessel was further complicated by the fact that it has "very little visual area" from the surface, making it hard to detect. Argentine authorities received a few blips of hope in their effort to find a three-decade old submarine - and 44 crew members - that suddenly stopped communicating during a routine mission on Wednesday.

On Saturday, several satellite signals thought to have come from the sub were detected near the Valdez peninsula.

The sub was travelling from a naval base at Ushuaia in the far south to Mar del Plata, around 200 miles south of Buenos Aires, when it vanished.

The sub was heading from a base in southern Argentina's Tierra del Fuego archipelago to Mar del Plata.

More than a dozen boats and aircraft from Argentina, the United States, Britain, Chile and Brazil had joined the effort.

Navy spokesman Enrique Balbi says Monday that a USA aircraft was sent to check an area where the noise was heard by two Argentine Navy ships.

Sixty-five meters long and seven meters wide, it was built by Germany's Thyssen Nordseewerke and launched in 1983.

"Yesterday's news was something of a respite for us, to know that there is life", Claudio Rodriguez, the brother of a crew member, said on television channel A24 on Sunday morning.

According to local media, the captain of the ARA San Juan contacted the naval base again after reporting the mechanical problem.

In addition to the UUVs, the US has deployed aircraft to assist in the search, as well as underwater equipment specifically designed for submarine search and rescue.

The government was working with Iridium Communications Inc to trace the location of the calls.

In the "worst-case scenario", the missing sub could run out of oxygen in two days, Balbi said.
