  • Sounds detected in undersea area where Argentine sub went missing

The Navy has deployed unmanned underwater vehicles to join in the search for the Argentine navy submarine A.R.A. San Juan, which is missing in South Atlantic waters.

URC sailors will join the Navy's P-8A Poseidon maritime aircraft and a NASA research aircraft, both already aiding in the ongoing search efforts near the submarine's last known location. Storms have complicated search efforts as relatives wait anxiously.

The submarine was heading from a base in southern Argentina's Tierra del Fuego archipelago to its home port in Mar del Plata.

Gabriel Galeazzi, a naval commander, told reporters that the submarine had come up from the depths and reported an electrical malfunction before it disappeared 268 miles (432 km) off the coast.

The calls that were detected "did not correspond to the satellite phone of the submarine San Juan", he said on Monday, adding that the craft had oxygen for seven days.

Hopes for a successful search for the submarine waned when the navy said satellite calls detected over the weekend did not in fact come from the vessel.

According to local media, the captain of the ARA San Juan contacted the naval base again after reporting the mechanical problem.

The submarine reportedly carried enough food, oxygen and fuel for the crew to survive about 90 days on the sea's surface, but only enough oxygen to last seven days underwater, he said.

More rescue equipment is scheduled to arrive in Argentina early next week.

In the "worst-case scenario", the missing sub could run out of oxygen in two days, said Argentine navy spokesman Enrique Balbi. The vessel was submerged when the navy last made contact with it, and Tuesday marks the sixth full day of its disappearance.

The US official said that the waters of the Atlantic Ocean where the sounds originated are extremely deep. "This is why we are deploying all resources with high-tech sensors". The navy did not give details of the content of that final communication. "We welcome the help we have received to find them".

More than a dozen global vessels and aircraft have joined the search for the missing submarine, which has been set back by stormy weather that has caused waves up to 20 feet.
