A pair of hackers discovered the archive of 57 million Uber riders and drivers and stole names, email addresses, phone numbers as well as driver's license numbers of 600,000 Uber drivers.

It's worth pointing out that while the company is now alerting the authorities, California's data security breach notification law requires disclosure in "the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay".

According to a statement Uber released on Tuesday, two individuals outside the company inappropriately accessed user data stored on a third-party cloud-based service in October 2016 and downloaded files.

The San Francisco-based company also revealed on Tuesday that it had only learned recently that personal information from about 57 million Uber accounts had been stolen in 2016. "We are changing the way we do business".

Healey says Uber knew about the theft for a year and failed to disclose it as required under MA law.

Britain's Information Commissioner's Office said Wednesday that the data security breach at Uber raised "huge concerns" about data policies and ethics at the United States ride-hailing firm. There are a number of troubling aspects about this incident, starting with the fact that Sullivan was a former federal prosecutor with the U.S. Department of Justice.

And even the SEC has faced security issues of its own.

"Research we conducted this year showed that in just the first half of 2017, 65% of organisations fell victim to malware-related breaches and 55% experienced phishing-initiated breaches".

A GitHub spokeswoman said the hack was not the result of a failure of GitHub's security.

Law enforcement advises companies to not pay hackers and report breaches to the authorities. Yet whatever comes of that investigation, Pilgrim - whose office will oversee the new Notifiable Data Breach (NDB) scheme from February 2018 - called the breach "a timely reminder to Australian businesses and agencies of the reputational vale of good privacy practice, and the reputational risks that can follow mishandling of personal data". As of Wednesday, attorneys general in New York, Massachusetts and Missouri had announced investigations.

Many other companies are failing to properly protect their privileged access accounts to both cloud and on-premises services, leaving them exposed to compromise from hackers that use default passwords, or non-unique user passwords stolen from other services, to breach their systems.

The developments have some of the hallmarks of the Equifax data breach, which the credit reporting firm said in September impacted 145 million Americans earlier this year.

Uber has set up a website for users who have been affected. It was also in blue moon due to the sexual harassment case. This week, the ride-hailing firm ousted its chief security officer and one of his deputies for their roles in keeping the hack under wraps, which included a $100,000 payment to the attackers.
