  • TransCanada shuts part of Keystone pipeline after South Dakota oil spill

The Washington Post reports that 210,000 gallons (5,000 barrels) of crude oil spilled from TransCanada's Keystone pipeline in South Dakota on Thursday morning. The cause was being investigated.

About 5,000 barrels of oil spilled Thursday.

"Ultimately, the cleanup responsibility lies with TransCanada, and they'll have to clean it up in compliance with our state regulations", Brian Walsh, an environmental scientist manager at the South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources told the Associated Press. State regulators have already granted construction permits for the pipeline. TransCanada says on its website that the company has safely transported more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil, or about 63 billion gallons, through the system since operations began in 2010.

The company says that it is providing state and federal regulators "with accurate and confirmed information on an ongoing basis".

TransCanada has indicated that the pipeline from Hardisty, Alberta, to Cushing, Okla., and to Wood River/Patoka, Ill., is expected to remain shut down.

The pipeline would transport oilsands oil from Alberta through Montana and South Dakota to Nebraska, where it would connect with existing pipelines that feed Texas Gulf Coast refineries. Investigators determined a weld problem was to blame in that spill.

The leak occurred about 3 miles southeast of the community of Amherst.

The leak was detected after a drop in pressure in the operating system. Based on the safety record of Keystone I, Nebraska's PSC should carefully consider the impacts of TransCanada's much larger Keystone XL pipeline as it weighs its decision on Monday. The project and its route through Nebraska has been controversial.
