Danica Roem, Virginia (Virginia House of Delegates) Roem unseated anti-LGBTQ Delegate Bob Marshall, and her electoral victory will make her Virginia's first out transgender public official and the nation's only out transgender state representative.

Phillipe Cunningham won in Ward 4 in north Minneapolis after a stunning victory over longtime incumbent and City Council president Barb Johnson.

Andrea Jenkins was elected to Minneapolis city council in Ward 8 on November 7, 2017.

Imse said the number of transgender elected officials doubled this year across the country to almost a dozen, including Danica Roem, the first out transgender state legislator in the Virginia House of Delegates.

"Andrea Jenkins shattered a glass ceiling tonight - becoming the first out trans woman ever elected to the city council of a major USA city".

Andrea Jenkins easily won the race for a south Minneapolis seat Tuesday with roughly 73 per cent of the vote. Jenkins' run for office was endorsed by the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party, the Minnesota affiliate of the national Democratic Party, as well as local publications like the Minneapolis Star Tribune.

Andrea Jenkins has just made history becoming the first trans woman of color in the United States to be elected to public office.

Jenkins, who is also an award-winning poet, writer, and performance artist, makes history alongside Danica Roem, a transgender woman who won a seat in Virginia's legislature.

Jenkins, 56, said she believes her and Roem's victories are proof numerous nation's communities won't succumb to hatred, bigotry or transphobia - and are willing to fight for social justice and equality for all minority groups. He's also the author of Virginia's transgender bathroom bill, which would've required individuals to use the bathroom that correlates with the gender on their birth certificates.

There were 18 openly transgender candidates that ran in the U.S.in 2017 and there are 11 running in 2018 elections, according to a list compiled by Harvard researcher Logan Casey.

"When people do try to enact policies that are going to be detrimental to these communities, I can be that voice to derail that, to stop that, to resist". We don't just want a seat at the table, we want to set the table'.

Tyler Titus is the first openly trans person ever elected in Pennsylvania. Her goal is to create records of the experiences of transgender and gender non-conforming people for historians.

Lisa Middleton became the first transgender person elected to a non-judicial office in California.
