  • Twitter Doubles Tweet Character Limit To 280 From 140

Twitter has long offered something of a compromise in allowing display names that are slightly longer - but only up to 20 characters.

The move signifies a monumental shift as it is the first time the tweet character cap has been raised since Twitter was founded 11 years ago, further highlighting the pressure the company feels to change in order to draw in more users.

English, on the other hand, does lend itself to crammed tweets with 9% of English tweets hitting the previous 140 character limit. Not everyone was happy about it (including a certain author of a best-selling series about wizards) but as some people have emphasized, you don't need to use all 280 characters if you don't want to.

In a support article published by the company, for changing display name, Twitter users can head to Profile settings on Twitter app (Android or iOS) or open Twitter.com and choose Edit Profile.

Changing your display name is a simple matter of heading to Settings, but full details are available on Twitter's support pages.

However, cricket's governing body, International Cricket Council (ICC) took good use of the new character limit and came up with the following tweet.

Well now anyone and everyone can have a go at a 280-charactered tweet. But Twitter said, "Here, have some more freedom to express yourself".

Apparently not feeling particularly inspired, Angela Merkel's spokesman said he would remain a man of few words - and few characters - on Twitter.
