  • Volvo and Uber expand tie-up in race to dominate self-driving cars

And Volvo say the new self-driving model won't be exclusive to Uber and the deal won't impact their own goal of having fully autonomous cars available to the public from around 2021.

The deal is worth about $1.4 billion, according to TechCrunch, citing a story in the Financial Times.

The agreement marks a bold step forward for Uber, both for its autonomous program and its overall operational strategy.

Uber was thrown into disarray earlier this year when Transport for London (TfL) refused to renew its licence to operate in the British capital due to concerns about public safety for passengers and the process of driver registration.

So past year Volvo partnered with Uber to deliver the XC90 to the ride firm to add their own self-driving capabilities and trial the whole thing out in Pittsburgh.

The XC90s, priced from $46,900 at USA dealers, will be delivered from 2019 to 2021 in the first commercial purchase by a ride-hailing provider, Volvo said in a statement Monday. The deal is valued at approximately $1.4 billion; each XC90 is priced at $46,900 in the US, according to Financial Times.

Uber and its investors have been itching for some good news and it appears that this partnership with Volvo is a great signs for its future. One of the main reasons why Uber went with the Volvo XC90 SUV is because it features a core for autonomous driving technology that will allow Uber to add its own automation features on top of what's already offered, Volvo states.

The tests - which have involved human operators to intervene if anything happens - took a beating in March, when one of the Volvo's crashed and flipped on its side in Arizona (Uber was not at fault in the accident and was hit by another auto that failed to yield).

"We're moving aggressively", Jeff Miller, Uber's head of automotive alliances, said.

Moreover, the agreement has showed that Uber is pushing on with the development of its autonomous cars programme, in spite a legal feud with Google's sister company, Waymo.
