  • Uber Reaches For The Sky With Plan To Launch Flying Taxi Service

Uber will begin testing the concept in 2020 in Los Angeles, as well as in Dallas and Dubai, the company said Wednesday.

They anticipate that travelling by flying vehicle will cost app-users as much as if they were to take the trip with Uber X, the company's luxury option.

And, unlike Uber's pricey helicopter service, the rides will be relatively affordable compared with other air travel options (Uber expects fares to be comparable to those of its on-the-ground ride-hailing options). At the Web Summit, a technology conference, in Lisbon this week, Uber announced that they signed a Space Act Agreement with the governmental agency to determine how unmanned aerial systems can fly at low levels safely, reports CNBC.

It will begin tests in Los Angeles in 2020, and subsequently Dallas, Fort Worth and Frisco.

In Uber's project, NASA will ensure the smooth running of the thousands of UberAir taxis that will be flying over cities, in addition to maintaining the existing air traffic control systems.

"UberAIR will be performing far more flights over cities on a daily basis than has ever been done before", Holden added. Dallas-Fort Worth wants to be the first metropolitan area in the United States to explore a flying auto pilot and Uber has already partnered with Hillwood Properties in the region.

Uber and NASA have just finalized a deal that should make "on demand aviation" a reality.

To be fair, Uber has recruited an impressive array of partners for its flying auto project. The nation's ride-sharing giant wants to begin test flights of a prototype flying auto in Los Angeles in 2020 and hopes to put it into commercial service by 2028.

NASA calls its programme Urban Air Mobility, while Uber calls the vehicles it envisions EVTOLs (or Electric Vertical TakeOff and Landing aircraft). Instead, the company has partnered with a number of other manufacturers, including Boeing-owned Aurora and Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer to piece the equipment together. In February, Bloomberg reported that two former NASA employees, Mark Moore and Tom Prevot, joined Uber to work on aircraft design and traffic management software. Chief product officer at Uber, Jeff Holden, said that "Combining Uber's software engineering expertise with NASA's decades of airspace experience to tackle this is a crucial step forward for Uber Elevate".
