United Nations dismisses the Saudi demand to re-open the Yemen Port

  • Saudis Will Open Aid Deliveries to Some 'Loyal' Yemen Ports

According to local media reports, millions of civilians could avoid the suffering if the Saudi regime reopens this vital port so that humanitarian groups can deliver aid to the people in Yemen.

This isn't the first time Saudi planes have attacked the airport, and indeed strikes against aid delivery sites, the airport and Hodeidah Port, have been recurring throughout the war, making aid shipments all the more complicated even on those rare occasions when the Saudis will let such aid in at all. The missile was intercepted near the capital of the country.

Sen. Chris Murphy, a Democrat from CT, took to the floor of the U.S. Senate Monday to draw attention to the "humanitarian nightmare" unfolding in Yemen - in part due to U.S. military assistance of the Saudi-led coalition laying seige to the country. Saudi Arabia and its allies joined the Yemen war in March 2015 with the stated aim of rolling back the rebels' territorial gains and restoring the government to power.

Saudi Arabia announced it shut down all ports after a November 4 ballistic missile attack on Riyadh near its global airport by the Shiite rebels known as Houthis.

The coalition has forced the closure of Sanaa airport for more than a year now, but permitted United Nations aid-suppling planes.

The UN aid agencies said the coalition's move to ease the siege was not enough, and warned of mass starvation and health catastrophes in Yemen's north.

Saudis Will Open Aid Deliveries to Some 'Loyal' Yemen Ports

"The humanitarian aspect of this is something we need to address immediately because we can't have those ports closed or those airports closed while we wait for discussions on new (inspection) mandates to go ahead".

McGoldrick said the Saudi plan to supply Yemen through the Saudi port of Jizan in the north and Aden in the south was too complicated, dangerous, slow, and expensive, adding an estimated $30 per tonne to every shipment.

Since Saudi Arabia has closed the Hodeideh Port in western Yemen, civilians have been at a high risk of starving to death or dying from an illness due to the lack of medicine.

However, Mr McGoldrick said there was "no indication" yet of the blockade being lifted.

There was global outcry last week when Saudi Arabia blockaded the country's ports after a missile was sacked towards its territory by the Houthi rebels.
