U.S. border agent Rogelio Martinez 36 was killed in the line of duty on Sunday authorities said

Border Angels head Enrique Morones, who has long advocated for immigration reform, said the organization hoped to facilitate more gate openings next year to enable more families separated by the border - in some cases for many years - to reunite, albeit briefly.

Border Patrol spokesmen said they could not provide any details on what caused the agent's injuries or what led to them, but a National Border Patrol Council official told KTSM the assailants were "undocumented immigrants" who used likely used rocks to bash the agents.

Authorities were searching Texas' Big Bend area for suspects and witnesses Monday after US Customs and Border Protection agent Rogelio Martinez was allegedly bashed to death with a rock while on patrol.

Texas Senator Ted Cruz and the state governor said the agents were the victims of an "attack" along a dusty stretch of road near the town of Van Horn in the Big Bend district.

Jeanette Harper, FBI spokeswoman for the El Paso field office, told the San Antonio Express-News only that Martinez and his partner were "not fired upon".

In a tweet, President Trump wrote "Border Patrol Officer killed at Southern Border, another badly hurt".

Brian Houston, who lives in San Diego, kisses his new bride Evelia Reyes, who lives in Mexico with her daughter Alexis, while Border Patrol agents look on.

He called the events leading up to Martinez's death an "attack" and a "stark reminder of the ongoing threat that an unsecured border poses to the safety of our communities and those charged with defending them", also releasing the statement on Twitter.

"While some people want to build walls, we want to open doors", he said.

Cruz said in a statement the nation is grateful 'for the courage and sacrifice of our border agents'.

Authorities were scouring West Texas on Monday for those behind an apparent attack that killed one USA border agent and injured another.

The 36-year-old agent died of his injuries, and his partner, who was not identified, remained in the hospital in serious condition, officials said. 'Our resources must be increased to prevent these attacks in the future'.

That area has accounted for about one percent of more than 61,000 arrests from October of last year, until May of this year.

Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Carlos Diaz declined to describe the incident in detail, saying the FBI is investigating.

It was the sixth time that the gate has opened since 2013, allowing people from the USA and Mexico who can not legally cross the border to visit without fear of deportation.
