3 dead, 15 hurt in New Mexico high school shooting

San Juan County Sheriff Ken Christesen told reporters that three people believed to be students died Thursday at Aztec High School. The shooter is down and at least two other people have been shot.

This story will be updated as more information about the shooting becomes available.

Authorities said they had cleared all the buildings at the school and that students were boarding buses to another location where they could be reunited with their parents.

Christesen said the shooter also died, but it is unknown whether the suspect was among the three confirmed deaths. Authorities in New Mexico said on Twitter that the shooter was among the the deceased.




The sheriff's office urged people to avoid the area and confirmed the school was evacauted. Nearby schools in the area have also been put on a preventative lockdown, AP reported.

Officials posted on Facebook shortly before 9 a.m. that the school is being evacuated.

The city of Aztec is located in the northwest corner of New Mexico and has a population of almost 7,000 people.
