A Child Playing With A Stove Started The Deadly Bronx Apartment Fire

  • The fire started on the first floor and tore through the apartment building

Fire officials in NY say the fatal fire that broke out in the Bronx on Thursday was caused by a child playing with a kitchen stove. The victims included an 8-month-old baby girl and her grandmother.

Among the dead were at least three members of the same family Karen Francis, 37, Charmela Francis, 7, and Kylie Francis, 2.

Mayor de Blasio told CNN on Friday, "This is a bad tragedy in the middle of the holidays".

"I understand when the fire was [going] he was trying to rescue".

Officials found the victims, one of whom was 1 year old, on various floors.

Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro (NY'-groh) says the fire that killed a dozen people on Thursday night started on a stove and raced through a door and up five floors.

So each time someone opened a window, more oxygen rushed into the building and fanned the flames. The fire chief called the fire "historic in its magnitude" because of the loss of life. But another family on the fifth floor suffered unimaginable tragedy. Four of those civilians are in critical condition, according to the fire department.

"I'm brokenhearted to know that a child ... you left the child unattended like that?" The Fire Department of NY said earlier that 15 people were seriously injured in the fire near the Bronx Zoo Thursday night.

"That's his nature", said 62-year-old Kwabena Mensah. "He wanted to help people out". He brought people outside.

Emmanuel Mensah's roommate was the last to see him. His father said he was home for Christmas - his first trip home since he enlisted a year ago.

"Private Emmanuel Mensah was a first generation immigrant, a soldier, and a New Yorker".

Residents of a Bronx apartment building where a deadly fire broke out are describing a chaotic scene. His heroism exemplifies the best of our city.

The fire was reported just before 7 p.m.at a five-story building a block from the Bronx Zoo.

"The stairway acted like a chimney", Nigro said at the Friday news conference. "People had very little time to react ... they couldn't get back down the stairs. Those that tried perished".

Survivors such as Joel Rodriguez now wonder what to do next.

"When he came here he just said, 'Dad, I want to join the Army, ' " he recalled.

The father lives next door to the now non-existent building. He went out and back twice, but "on the third time he couldn't find his way out", he said.

"We've lost so many people". She made it out with her four children and husband but lost Mensah in the mix.
