There is no need to lay optical fibre cables or string cables along poles for the objective. So now, the team's next move will be to put FSOC equipment in boxes that will be mounted all over the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The company hopes that free space optical communications (FSOC) technology will form the spine of high-bandwith internet in southeast India.

Alphabet's X is working with AP State FiberNet, a telecommunications body owned by India's Andhra Pradesh state government, to introduce thousands of FSOC boxes across the state.

According to Department of IT & Electronics, the MoU was signed in the presence of Minister of IT and CEO of Google X Astro Teller in San Francisco during the former's United States tour.

He included that the AP Government is focused on bring high-speed internet facility with around 12 million families and 1,30,000 undertakings (government and private) by March 2019.

As part of the partnership, and to provide real-time support for the smooth operation of this project, X will also set up a local office with the help of the AP Government. Lokesh, son of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, tweeted that X will be the state's innovation partner, deploy its resources and team to help achieve the goal of Digital Andhra. Andhra Pradesh has more than 15,000 towers without fiber connectivity and relies on microwave links to maintain voice and 2G data service.

FSOC links use beams of light to deliver high-speed, high-capacity connectivity over long distances - just like fiber optic cable, but without the cable. If the implementation of this project in the state of Andhra Pradesh is successful, FSOC can be taken forward to provide network connection to the remotest reaches of the world.

X, the research division of Google's parent company Alphabet, has developed a new high-speed wireless technology that could make it easier to connect millions of residents in rural areas.

Less than 20% of the 53 million people in Andhra Pradesh now have access to broadband connectivity.

AP Fiber grid is an ambitious project launched to give affordable high-speed internet connection to every household in the state.
