Apple rubbished those claims, and stressed that their only goal is to enhance the customers experience.
In a statement this afternoon, Apple explained that this "feature" was first implemented with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE a year ago and most recently came to the iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2.
Apple has been criticised for failing to make users aware of the practice before this week.
But few people keep their phones long enough to test that theory, because even if a phone works well it eventually becomes outdated. It's also on track to be rolled out to newer devices in the future. It came to the same conclusion saying that the older iPhones indeed ran slower with the latest version of iOS compared to a new phone or a phone with new battery. When it comes to iPhones "old and slow" comes only third.
Anyone that owns an older iPhone may be rightly upset to learn that their device can not perform as well as it did the day it came out of the box due to degradation of the battery.
Has your old iPhone been performing sluggishly? One of the biggest issues to me is how sneakily Apple implemented this so-called "feature".
I do agree that more transparency could have helped users feel less blindsided. Apple has been relatively silent over the issue but in a statement earlier this week, they revealed the reason. "But you could also just get a new battery for about $80". The first, filed by iPhone users Stefan Bogdanovich and Dakota Speasin California, claims that slowing down phones causes users to suffer; both customers claim they "suffered interferences to their iPhone usage due to the intentional slowdowns". The throttling only kicks in if your phone has an inefficient battery.
You'd expect battery capacity to decrease as batteries age.
Another argument some people are making is that Apple could be more proactive in offering battery replacements either in the stores or through kits consumers could buy.
Furthermore, the company claimed that its software updates for the iPhone 6, iPhone 6S, iPhone SE and iPhone 7 are created to "smooth out" peak power demands, prevent these surprise shutdowns and ultimately prolong the lifespan of batteries. I am not sure how realistic the scenario of consumers opening up their iPhone to swap out their battery really is.
