AT&T FirstNet public safety network has all 50 USA states participating

AT&T (T) has most states in the bag for its FirstNet wireless public safety network, with Thursday the final day for states and most US territories to announce decisions on taking part in the project.

Gov. Chris Sununu announced his intention to opt-in to the nationwide network for first responders after previously deciding to opt-out and go with an alternative vendor. While New Hampshire has said it will opt out, it's still in talks with FirstNet. During the rollout, AT&T said it will continue to explore upgrades like 5G.

AT&T says that it will ultimately spend $40 billion to build out the network, which it calls "FirstNet".

As part of the agreement, AT&T will use federal funding to build new cell towers around the state that will help improve existing cell phone service in many rural and tribal areas.

Rivada Networks did not respond to StateScoop's requests for comment by publication time. States that don't announce decisions will be included in the FirstNet project.

Governor Sununu stated he believed the decision deadline of December 28 approached too rapidly for states to feel confident in an opt-out decision, and he did not want New Hampshire to be the only one with an independent network.

"We are pleased that New Hampshire will join FirstNet", First Responder Network Authority CEO Mike Poth said in a statement.

FirstNet aims to provide a nationwide broadband network for America's public safety community "with access to new technologies and increased capacity and reliability for their mobile communications and data needs". The carrier recently held an opt-in/out period during which states had to decide whether they wanted in...and, it turns out, they all do. American Samoa, Guam and Northern Marianas have until March 12 to decide to opt in. Some had explored other options, but ultimately made a decision to go with FirstNet.
