  • BlackBerry ends support for Priv its first Android phone

"Having now stepped outside the original 2-year window, we will no longer be delivering monthly updates for the PRIV moving forward", said Alex Thruber, senior vice-president and general manager of the Mobility Solutions Division at BlackBerry. BlackBerry will however continue to offer support for the Priv in case critical security vulnerabilities gets exposed in the near future, the company has further announced. This announcement comes as the device steps outside BlackBerry's two-year update policy.

The trade-up program will most likely let PRIV, BB10, and BBOS users buy BlackBerry KEYone or Motion at a discounted pricing. The company launched its first Android smartphone, the Blackberry Priv exactly two years ago, but is finally ready to stop providing support for the device. Blackberry, who made the decision to ditch its own OS in favour of Android, has chose to axe support for the Priv, declaring it to complete its two-year life cycle. When the Priv was announced, the company previously said that it would support the device for 2 years.

But this is not a full stop for Priv users.

BlackBerry made a triumphant return into the smartphone space with the BlackBerry KEYone, a phone that brought the modern Android experience with the classic BlackBerry physical keyboard.

The phone has a 5.4-inch dual-curved WQHD Plastic AMOLED display and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 featuring a hexa-core, 64-bit processor and Adreno 418 GPU clocked at 600 MHz.

The single-SIM phone ran Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out-of-the-box and came with BlackBerry's own secure and productivity modifications up top. The 32GB of internal storage was also expandable. It packs in a 3,410 mAh battery, which was claimed to give up to 22.5 hours of battery life.
