  • Cop dragged half a mile

Officers approached the auto with guns drawn and took Cabrera and the female passenger into custody.

The car's speedometer flashes into view for a moment in the footage - and shows the auto reaching more than 60mph. But as he tried to enter the vehicle, the driver woke up, and suddenly accelerated, with the officer hanging off the driver's side door.

During the chase, Cabrera is accused of trying to ram into Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue trucks responding to the original overdose call.

After Officer Cusack let go, Cabrera led police on a 20-mile chase. He suffered injuries that require surgery.

Cabrera and the other female occupant of his vehicle continued to flee, but were apprehended by police a short time later after a pursuit through rush-hour traffic.

When the suspect finally slowed his speed as he approached the Century Village exit located at 129 Avenue and Pembroke Road, our officer determined this to be the safest opportunity for him to release his hold and to roll away from the vehicle's tires.

The adventure ended around 9:10 a.m. on eastbound Interstate 595, near the exchanges for US 441 and Florida's Turnpike.

Cabrera, who was eventually stopped around at 9 a.m. on Interstate 595, was charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, felony fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license and reckless driving. A baggie with an unknown substance was visible in the vehicle, police said.

The 38-year-old Pines resident had done eight months in prison for grand theft in 2014.

Court records don't list a lawyer for Cabrera. His shoes and uniform were 'shredded from being dragged along the roadway, ' according to a police report.

Police said a security guard in the neighborhood called authorities after spotting a man and a woman who were unconscious in the auto.
