Facebook knows you're in a photo before being tagged

  • New Facebook tools to protect users prevent harassment

These settings boil down to Facebook demanding forgiveness after refusing to ask for permission, and it may not sit well with users. Given that potential creepiness, and our longstanding interest in how People You May Know actually works, a Facebook spokesperson pre-emptively sent us a note about the facial recognition tool. This approach was preferred by users over having settings for individual features that use facial recognition, Candela said.

If you do opt in to facial recognition, Facebook has a new feature to "help you find photos that you're not tagged in and help you detect when others might be attempting to use your image as their profile picture".

This new setting will be able to be turned off with a simple on/off control.

In addition to improved identity management, Facebook is also introducing a way for people who are visually impaired to know more about who is in the photos they encounter on Facebook.

These new additions expand on how Facebook already uses facial recognition, which is primarily through "tag suggestions" - a feature started in 2010 that suggests which of your friends should be tagged in photos that you upload to the site. When a new photo or video shows up on Facebook, it is compared to the template to determine who it is.

It's easy to identify your face if Facebook is only looking for you among the photos your friends have uploaded. Although it does not appear to have been implemented yet, Facebook will soon allow users to turn off facial recognition on their accounts with a single switch. The post is titled: " Hard Questions: Should I Be Afraid of Face Recognition Technology? .

The feature, which is powered by Facebook's artificial intelligence technology, will alert users when someone else uploads a photo of them.

"When it comes to face recognition, control matters". More specifically, the poster must set the image's audience to "everyone" for you to be notified.

The same technology is also being used for a new tool that supports people with visual impairments.

The objective of the feature, according to Facebook, is to help users better manage their online identity.

"The words "face recognition" can make some people feel uneasy, conjuring dystopian scenes from science fiction", wrote Rob Sherman, Facebook's deputy chief privacy officer.
