Google's Tango Will Shut Down On March 1

  • Google shutting down its augmented reality platform Project Tango in favor of ARCore

It seems Project Tango - the ambitious AR platform, is officially getting the latter treatment as well and heading towards the discarded idea pile. ATAP, Google's advanced technology and projects lab, developed Tango but it was soon succeeded by ARCore. ARCore is smart move for Google considering the reach and implications of its competitor's platform, which is why Google made a decision to shut down Tango come March 1, 2018. Thank you to our incredible community of developers who made such progress with Tango over the last three years.

The tweet also claims that Google will continue the augmented reality journey with its ARCore technology, in the future.

When Google first launched Project Tango, it had a lot of potential leading to the future of smartphones.

As Project Tango is a hardware-reliant approach, smartphones based on Project Tango such as the ASUS ZenFone AR and Lenovo Phab 2 Pro were launched with special sensors to support AR. The platform, built on Tango, competes with Apple's ARKit augmented reality program. However, ARCore is different from Project Tango.

However this does not mean that Google isn't pursuing AR tech anymore.

Well, the requirement of specialized hardware is one of the reasons why Project Tango wasn't adopted as widely as it should have been. But later the project saw a downgrade with its speed and accuracy issues. However, ARcore doesn't need a special camera to work, and it's already supported on high-end Android phones like the Google Pixel 2 and Samsung's Galaxy S8. While the latter might not be almost as precise in its spacial mapping capabilities as Tango, the online giant naturally sees more potential in this approach, over the heavily hardware-reliant Tango. This does not come across as a surprise because Google had already confirmed in August 2017 that they plan on saying goodbye to Tango. That's all in addition to the regular camera hardware.
