Idaho is Nation's Fastest-Growing State, Census Bureau Reports

  • Utah’s population is growing faster than every state except for Idaho and Nevada say new Census estimates

Still, residents moving to the US from other countries continue to be a significant factor in USA population growth as 1.1 million people moved to the USA over the past year, according to the census bureau.

According to Idaho Department of Labor data, eastern Idaho is neck-and-neck with northern Idaho as the Gem State's second most populated region behind the Treasure Valley, where more than one in every three Idaho residents live. IL lost more than 33,000 residents, dropping to the sixth most populous state in the union with 12,802,023 residents. Many neighboring states, like Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota and MI, all saw moderate population gains during the same period. Furthermore, the population of voting-age residents (adults age 18 and over) grew to 252.1 million (77.4 percent of the 2017 total population), an increase of 0.93 percent from 2016 (249.5 million).

Census officials confirmed IL lost its spot as the fifth-largest state in the wake of Pennsylvania's modest population growth. The Census has numbered Pennsylvania's population at 12,805,537.

The latest figures from the U. S. Census Bureau show Massachusetts' population is growing, just not by very much. In 2017, 38.0 percent of the nation's population lived in the South and 23.8 percent lived in the West.

Other states in the West - Nevada, Utah and Washington - saw similar percentage increases in their population.

Meanwhile, in neighboring states such as Idaho, Colorado and Utah, the labor market continued to expand, which drew a number of people away from Wyoming.

That decline is one of the worst, according to data released Wednesday by the Census Bureau. By comparison, Idaho's population grew by 2.2 percent, and Missouri, by.4 percent. Net global migration decreased 1.8% - the first drop since 2012 to 2013.

Maine's population increased by around 5,600, and Rhode Island by around 2,000.
