Instagram finally lets you save Stories so people can enjoy them forever

Video obtained by The Next Web also reveals that Instagram may be testing a GIF feature that lets users search for and place GIFs in their stories and posts, sourcing the GIF's via Giphy. Users will also be able to pin "Stories" content to the top of their profiles for an extended period of time, through a new feature called Stories Highlights. The Stories Archive is linked to your Post Archive and you can switch between the two when you're feeling nostalgic.
Starting today, December 5, Instagram will be adding every story you post to a section of the archive feature. "Stories Highlights" is a new part of your profile where you can express more of who you are through stories you've shared, whereas "Stories Archive" privately saves your Stories for viewing them later. That gave them an ephemeral, fleeting quality, but if you get as attached to your Stories as I do, that expiration date was a bit of a bummer.
The stories feature was borrowed from Snapchat a year ago. You can add them to your main feed, for instance, or use them to add to the highlights section of your profile - alternatively, you can turn off the archive feature entirely.
Another copy-and-paste of Snapchat, "Archives" is Instagram's version of Memories. This allows some of your Stories to remain on Instagram for more than 24 hours.
The platform said a lot of users were downloading their stories but a usual complaint was that it was gone before they had the chance to save it to their phone. To edit or delete a highlight, press and hold its icon. In your Stories Archive, your stories will appear in a grid with the most recent stories at the bottom. Note: Only you can see your archived stories.
From there you will be able to view, share, or add to a highlight right from your archive.
To create a highlight for your profile, tap the "New" circle on the left side of your profile, choose something from your archive, select a cover for your highlight, and give it a name. "This makes it easy for you to revisit your favorite moments later on or bring them back to life in a highlight", the company explained on its blog. Instagram StoriesHighlights and Stories Archives will be rolling out to iOS and Android users on Tuesday.
