Israeli missile targets military base near Damascus

  • Reports: Syrian Army Intercepts Missiles Near Damascus

But SANA insisted, citing informed sources in Syria, that Israel had launched a number of surface-to-surface missiles against the military base, adding that the Syrian air defense intercepted them and destroyed two of them.

At least twelve Iranian military personnel were reportedly killed and many injured on Friday night in an alleged Israeli airstrike on an Iranian base in Syria, according to reports by Arabic media on Saturday.

The Britain-based group, which monitors the war through a network of contacts in Syria, said the attack hit near al-Kiswa town south of the capital Damascus, causing loud explosions.

"The air defences of the Syrian army were able to deal with the attack... destroying two of the missiles", it said, adding that the attack nonetheless caused "material damage".

The missile attack was believed to be the latest in a series of Israeli attacks on Syria, where a six-year civil war has devastated much of the country and displaced millions of citizens. Israel has also been providing medical treatment to the extremist militants wounded in Syria. Sky News said the strike had been conducted with air-to-surface missiles from Lebanese airspace.

A report from the BBC in September alleged that Iran had established a military base in Syria, south of the capital; while Iranian forces may not have an overwhelming presence in the country, numerous militias - including Lebanon's Hezbollah - that are aligned with the Syrian regime are bankrolled and armed by the Islamic Republic.

Earlier, in November, the Israel Defense Forces shot down a drone over the Syrian Golan Heights.
