  • Jimmy Smith receives 4-game suspension

The surging Baltimore Ravens will play the final quarter of the regular season without cornerback Jimmy Smith, who will be on injured reserve while serving a suspension for violating the National Football League policy on performance enhancing substances.

Smith, the Ravens' top cornerback, made a decision to drop his appeal and begin serving his suspension after tearing his Achilles in Sunday's 44-20 victory over the Detroit Lions, the source told Schefter.

The suspension will ultimately cost him $182,352, which would've been $2 million if had not just restructured his deal with Baltimore in August.

"I know the work he's put in this year, the expectations he had and the season he's been having", Ravens cornerback Brandon Carr said of Smith.

But they got some bad news on cornerback Jimmy Smith, who is now out for the season with a torn Achilles.

He has been dealing with an Achilles injury for most of the season and rested it by practicing only once or twice a week. He started the Ravens' first 12 games and also had 26 tackles and nine passes defended.

Smith, a first-round draft pick in 2011, has been hampered by injuries throughout his career.

Smith is the Ravens' third player to test positive for a banned substance this season. He's appeared in all 16 regular season games only twice; previous year, he was placed on injured reserve after suffering a high-ankle sprain in Week 14.

The seventh-year pro went down with the non-contact injury late in the second quarter and rookie Marlon Humphrey would come in to replace him.

The loss of Smith is a big hit to the Ravens (7-5), who control their playoff fate heading into the final four weeks of the regular season.
