The source added that Lionsgate was happy to sell the film back in order to give Travolta and producers the opportunity to rollout the movie as they wanted.

"Unfortunately, the reports were speculation bordering on fake news", the actor told Deadline. The movie - which centers around the activities of the Italian Mafia - was canceled just ten days before it hit theaters because of, in Travolta's words, "fake news".

John Travolta headlines the film, along with Kelly Preston, William DeMeo.

A long-planned new biopic of NY mob boss John Gotti has been pulled from release two weeks before it was set to be released in the US. "I invited his group, they saw it and bought it", Travolta said. No word yet on why Lionsgate chose to drop the movie, but stay tuned... "They said no, twice, and I literally begged them to reconsider and they finally and generously let it go", Travolta continued to Deadline.

Travolta says he found a partner in Edward Wilson, who has produced films like Woody Allen's "Cafe Society" and "Wonder Wheel". Our mistake was we should have said something right then, and discussed our plan for the film.

"All these reports are saying the studio "dropped" Gotti and John Travolta, that's 100 percent false", says the film's executive producer Keya Morgan. "We didn't anticipate this speculation that is so grossly wrong", he told the outlet. Travolta said there was "something humane" about Gotti, and that the theme of the movie is how a leader acts when fronting an organization which is expected to behave ostentatiously.

Nevertheless, Walson believes it's "a big movie-star film, with a multi-dimensional, iconic character portrayed by one of the great multi-talented actors. We are hoping to take this movie to Cannes; it's a movie star film that deserves the glitter of Cannes, and then a wide release shortly thereafter".
