The attackers were exchanging fire with security forces at the Directorate of Agriculture Institute of Peshawar, informed police sources.

During the onslaught on the training centre, a spokesman for the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Muhammad Khurasani, claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to AFP.

IG KPK Mehsud had earlier confirmed that at least four persons were injured including two students in the attack.

"Nine suspects were nabbed and were being probed for their role in the attack", a senior police officer said. Security forces were quick to respond and killed all terrorists involved in an operation.

The incident comes amid tight security across Pakistan as it celebrates the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

Officials refuted the militants' claim that the agriculture directorate was housing any intelligence office.

He said it was apparently done to keep the attackers motivated.

This is not the first attack on a university in Pakistan.

In 2014, at least six Taliban militants had attacked an army-run school in Peshawar that left around 141 people dead. Sanctuary on the Pakistan side and presence on the Afghan side remain a security challenge for both countries and pose a threat to regional security and stability.

Ghafoor added that Afghanistan's director general of military operations was now in Pakistan and that the issue would be taken up with him.

In the firefight that ensued, they were confronted by police and paramilitary troops, who killed all the assailants. They shot and wounded a security guard and then moved toward the dormitory, according to Islam Zeb, the deputy commissioner of Peshawar. Some were in critical condition, authorities said.

"Our mujahids have attacked the building because it was used as office for ISI".

Those injured in the attack include a gatekeeper, journalist of a Channel-24 channel, two students among others. The clearance operation was launched afterwards.
