  • Miss America CEO resigns after report of derogatory emails

Also on Saturday, the organisation's president Josh Randle and chairman Lynn Weidner resigned.

The writer responded by questioning whether he and Haskell were part of a tiny group of people who had not had sex with Hagan.

In statements prior to the leadership resigning, the Miss America Organisation said Mr Haskell had apologised and that the matter was closed.

In its own statement Thursday night, the Miss America Organization said that Haskell, who earns $500,000 a year as CEO, had apologized to the board for his comments. Others speculated about how many men one particular former Miss America had had sex with. The outgoing president apologized to Hagan nonetheless, and said the comment does not reflect his values or those of the Miss America Organization.

ABC News obtained a full statement from Randle on Saturday that said his inappropriate response to an email about the appearance of 2013 Miss America Mallory Hagan came several months before he worked at the Atlantic City-based organization.

Leaked emails show Haskell allowed or participated in discussions of former pageant winners where their sex lives and weight were derided; 2013 Miss America victor Mallory Hagan (pictured above, at the 2013 GLAAD Awards) received the lion's share of criticism.

His resignation is effective immediately, while Mr Randle and Ms Weidner will remain for a few weeks to help with the leadership transition.

Miss America chairman and CEO Sam Haskell resigned Saturday-just a day after saying he wouldn't, the New York Daily News reports.

Elizabeth Gracen, an Arkansan who won the competition in 1982, also signed her name to petition.

Dick Clark Productions, which produces the nationally televised pageant broadcasts, tells The Associated Press that it has cut ties with the pageant over the emails, calling them "appalling".

Randle apologized Saturday to 2013 pageant victor Mallory Hagan, whose weight he and others ridiculed in the emails.

The top leadership of the Miss America Organization has resigned, sweeping out officials implicated in the email scandal. The Children's Miracle Network Hospitals said it was "conducting an immediate review of the situation and will take appropriate actions".
