An MSNBC spokesperson told NBC News that the execs were told that Matthews made inappropriate jokes and comments about the woman in front of others, that the matter was reviewed and it was determined the comments were inappropriate and made in poor taste but were never meant as propositions.

The woman reportedly complained to company executives after Matthews made a series of "inappropriate comments and jokes about her while in the company of others".

NBC paid a significant sum of money to an assistant producer on MSNBC's "Hardball with Chris Matthews" for two decades after she complained that he sexually harassed her, according to The Daily Caller.

MSNBC declined to comment on whether the complaint arose from an isolated incident or if Matthews, 71, had been involved in similar circumstances in the past with other employees at the network.

For its report, the Daily Caller cited two unnamed sources. Matthews' show was on CNBC before it began airing on MSNBC.

An MSNBC spokesman confirmed Saturday the company made a separation-related payment to one of Chris Matthews employees after the woman complained about sexual harassment.

Attempts to reach Matthews on Sunday were unsuccessful. While Matthews has continued to host the investigative talk show, Hardball, for the last 20 years with the addition of 2002's "Chris Matthews Show", as well as authored numerous books and autobiographies.

The report comes just weeks after NBC fired longtime "Today" host Matt Lauer after he was accused of sexual harassment and sexual assault.

NBC also cut ties with "Game Change" author Mark Halperin in October after more than a dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct while he was political director at ABC News from 1994 to 2004.

Instead, Lack has told employees that the investigation would be handled in-house by NBC lawyers and human resources executives. Lauer has said he is "truly sorry" but said some of what was being said about him was untrue or mischaracterized.
