  • Secunderabad horror Day after set afire by ‘spurned lover’ woman dies

The woman had suffered 85 per cent burns and was being treated at Gandhi Hospital.

On Thursday evening, while she was heading for home, Karthik approached her in a bike and doused her in petrol that he had carried in a bottle, set her on fire on the main road and fled.

She also disclosed that from last several days Karthik has been harassing her. "He got into an argument with her as to why she refused to marry him", the official said. When they were arguing on the road he took out a vehicle of kerosene and doused her. However, some local residents took quick cognizance of the matter and doused the fire.

Sandhya Rani, a company receptionist working in Secunderabad, was on her way home from work around 6.45 pm when Karthik, a former colleague, came on a motorbike and stopped to speak to her.

The attacker, Karthik, had known her for over a year and claimed to be in love with her, said sources.

According to reports, the accused called the victim at the spot, where he poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. She was rescued and shifted to hospital, " Deputy Commissioner B Sumathi said. Before Sandhya was set ablaze, the accused called the victim on her mobile phone and the police got his telephone number, which was kept switched off. Sandhya's mother is heart broken after her charred daughter succumbed to the burns. "However, Sandhya insisted on continuing with the job and ended their relationship". Based on Karthik's body language and hand gestures, it appears they were arguing, and Sandhya started walking faster as if trying to shake him off.

On a complaint by girl's brother, police picked up the accused, who allegedly resorted to the ghastly crime as the girl had spurned his advances.

The police had earlier registered a case under IPC section 307 (attempt to murder).
