  • Shohei Ohtani Rumors: Star Meets with Rangers, Mariners, Cubs Representatives

Ohtani, the 23-year-old Japanese right-hander with a 100 miles per hour fastball and devastating left-handed swing, met with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Los Angeles Angels and the San Francisco Giants on Monday, according to reports.

What does that mean for the St. Louis Cardinals? St. Louis was only able to offer him a $300,000 signing bonus, as the new CBA limits team's spending on global talent.

Ohtani, 23, is arguably the top free agent on the market.

Ohtani has handcuffed himself, because if he waited until he was 25, then he could get a deal with no pay restrictions, for more than $100 million.

His deadline to finalize a contract with an Major League Baseball team is December 22.

USA Today reported Sunday that several Major League Baseball general managers see the Mariners as "clear-cut" favorites to land Ohtani. "The feedback from that was outstanding". "When players are in the marketplace like that, you do everything you possibly can", said Cashman, whose team has been scouting Ohtani since 2012. "I can't change that that we're a big market and I can't change we're in the East".

Red Sox spokesman Kevin Gregg confirmed Boston's elimination from the bidding.

It is uncertain when representatives from the other six clubs still in the running for Ohtani will meet with him, but most of those meetings are expected to take place this week, ahead of the winter meetings.

Ohtani could have waited two more years to reach the minimum age at which he would be eligible for a lucrative major league contract, part of restrictions on global signings included in MLB's recent collective bargaining agreement.

The window for Ohtani to negotiate with clubs will expire at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 22.

The Ham Fighters posted Ohtani, with a release fee of $20 million.
