(CNN) - The 21-year-old man who shot and killed two students at Aztec High School in New Mexico on Thursday had previously been investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for online comments about planning a mass shooting.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old William Atchison, died after the shooting.

Kassetas said they don't believe Marquez and Fernandez were targets, and that Atchison planned on killing many more students.

The only contact with law enforcement was what they described as a generic message on an online gaming forum in 2016 in which he talked about what weapons might be used in a mass shooting. At the time, he reportedly did not own any weapons other than an airsoft pellet gun and said he had no plans for an attack and just liked to troll sites online.

The town is about a three-hour drive from Albuquerque. The high school remained closed Friday, and investigators were treating it as a crime scene and were still trying to assess all the bullet holes. As of 2 p.m. ET Thursday, New Mexico State Police announced there were "no more credible threats" to students at area schools.

Deputies and Lt. Kyle Lincoln from the San Juan County Sheriff Department then helped clear the building and actively searched the school.

A former Aztec school board member who went by the scene shortly after it unfolded and said this is absolutely unheard of in their small community. He had a backpack with him in which he had his gun and multiple magazines, ammunition storage and feeding devices. Classes were in session at the time.

"He had no chance to survive the encounter", Kassetas said about Fernandez. If either of these times are hard to attend, please feel free to call the Farmington Police Department victim advocates at 505-327-7701 or call the District Attorney's victim advocates at 505-599-9810 starting next week, as Thursday and Friday may be hard to answer calls due to assisting families.

Kassetas said Atchison then walked up and down the hallways firing into classrooms.

She said when it was finally safe to leave the room, someone was dead on the ground right outside her classroom.

"This person is not only a coward, he is evil", Christesen said.

She didn't have a key to lock the door so she put all of the students in a storage area and the barricaded the door with a couch, authorities said.
