  • Texas Tech Football vs. USF: 5 bold predictions for Birmingham Bowl

The Texas Tech Red Raiders lost to the South Florida Bulls in the Birmingham Bowl, 38-34, on Saturday, Dec. 23, at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. USF quarterback Quinton Flowers was the hero fo the day after putting the Bulls on his back in the second half, shrugging aside a woeful first half to pull USF from behind for the win.

Shimonek to Dylan Cantrell on the 3-yard touchdown pass gives the Red Raiders a 17-10 lead early in the 3rd quarter.

South Florida converted a fourth-down on the first play of the quarter and drove as far as the Red Raiders' goal line but could not convert a fourth-and-goal attempt at the 1-yard line to tie the game.

INJURY REPORT: Justin Stockton (concussion) is probable for Texas Tech today, while Derrick Willies (disciplinary) is questionable and D.J. Polite-Bray (disciplinary) is out for the year.

On the opening drive, Tech was unable to score a touchdown and settled for a 26-yard field goal from junior kicker Clayton Hatfield. Shimonek started the first 11 games of the season for Texas Tech before being benched in the team's regular season finale against Texas. The senior quarterback was also a threat on the ground, as he rushed for 106 yards and another touchdown on 14 carries. Much like SC past year, the Red Raiders barely reached bowl eligibility in 2017.

Red Raiders with the go ahead touchdown, Nic Shimonek connected with Keke Coutee for the 5 yard score. Facing fourth and three, the Red Raiders made a decision to go for it, but Shimonek was sacked by Senat for a loss of 10 yards.

The risque Birmingham Bowl trophy, replete with its sculpture of a bare-bottomed Roman god.

In response, the Tech defense forced USF to go three-and-out by putting pressure on Flowers and making him throw it away on third and eight.

Flowers threw a 64-yard touchdown bomb to Marquez Valdez-Scantling.

Two of Texas Tech's best weapons were on full display against South Florida.

USF allowed a late touchdown with 1:31 left to fall behind 34-31, but Quinton Flowers hit Tyre McCants for a 26-yard touchdown with just:16 left. South Florida scored nine plays later on a 5-yard run by Flowers to tie the game at 24-24 with 9:30 left to play in the game. Their first touchdown, a 21-yard Flowers strike over the middle to McCants (six catches, 88 yards), didn't occur until the final minute of the half and was set up by a shanked Red Raiders punt.
