The Guardian, citing German newspaper Handelsblatt, reported that the bank has since cooperated with the request and handed over banking records to investigators.

The news came days after Mueller unveiled his fourth indictment in the sprawling Russian Federation probe, which is examining possible collusion between Trump's presidential campaign and what United States intelligence believes was an effort by Moscow to tilt the election in his favor.

Analysts questioned why Mr. Flynn, who was serving as national security advisor, was not fired immediately, if he was believed to be lying about the interactions with Russian Federation, which have plagued the White House and are the subject of federal and congressional investigations.

An internal investigation carried out by Deutsche Bank didn't yield any evidence of connections between the client relationship with Trump and the bank's mirror trades affair, a person briefed on the matter said. "The investigation would surely continue, though perhaps with someone who doesn't think his job includes protecting the FBI and Mr. (James) Comey from answering questions about their role in the 2016 election". "We have confirmed this with the bank and other sources", Dowd wrote in an email.

Deutsche Bank had been one of Trump's most reliable lenders.

On Friday Mueller charged Trump's former national security advisor Michael Flynn with lying to investigators about his contacts with Russian officials. Mueller's investigation had expanded to examine a broad range of transactions involving the president's businesses, including dealings by his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, a person familiar with the probe told Bloomberg News after the publication of the Times interview.

"Trump was aware of the issue a couple of weeks before a conversation with then-FBI Director James B. Comey in which Comey said the president asked him if he could be lenient while investigating Flynn, whom Trump had just fired for misleading Pence about the nature of his conversations with the Russian", the Post said. The bank has settled U.S. and United Kingdom investigations into how it helped Russian clients move money out of the country, but a settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice is still outstanding.

Many media outlets included the denial from Trump's attorney in their reports, but the idea of his bank being subpoenaed for his financial records makes for far juicier headlines.
