  • Trump Working Against A Future Senator Romney

President Donald Trump is aiming to block Republican and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney's run for Utah's senator by trying to convince seven-term state Sen.

However, Utah Republican House Speaker Greg Hughes maintained Romney "could be a great ally of the president, but, as you well know, they're very different people and have very different personalities".

Politico reported Sunday that Trump is going all out to persuade Hatch to seek re-election in no small part to prevent his longtime nemesis, Romney, from winning the seat.

According to Politico, Romney himself has grown frustrated by the "ongoing uncertainty" about Hatch's future plans, especially after the senator encouraged him to consider run in the first place.

Trump's support might have less to do with Hatch, however, than with a secret desire to block Mitt Romney from serving in the Senate. Their suspicions are warranted: Trump has sounded off to friends about how he doesn't like the idea of a Senator Romney, Politico reports.

"Hatch is a known entity for Trump and has been really good for the president for the most part", Kirk Jowers, former chairman and general counsel for Romney's political action committee, told Politico.

He charged that Trump's domestic policies would lead to recession and his foreign policies would make the world more risky.

Hatch will accompany Trump on his trip to Salt Lake, to his meetings and the signing of an executive order that will reduce the size of the Bears Ears and Escalante national monuments. Trump previously said he is doing it for Hatch.

During the 2016 presidential primary race, he labeled Trump a fraud and a phony in a University of Utah speech.

Romney has called out Trump several times. In August, Romney demanded Trump apologize for saying that both sides were to blame for violence at a white-supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The other opposes racism and bigotry.

Romney made clear that he took a dim view of Trump's endorsement on Monday of Republican Roy Moore for a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama that will be decided in a special election next week.
