  • Leaders of Britain First have their Twitter accounts suspended

The leaders of far-right group Britain First are among the first in the United Kingdom to have their Twitter accounts suspended in a new crackdown by the social network.

The changes announced last month broaden Twitter's "hateful conduct policy" to permanently suspend any account-covering usernames, profile bios and display names-that displays "violent threats, multiple slurs, epithets, racist or sexist tropes, incites fear or reduces someone to less than human". The account of far-right group Britain First, a small group that regularly posts inflammatory videos purporting to show Muslims engaged in acts of violence, was among the first to go dark.

Twitter's diminished tolerance for tweets considered hateful, abusive or violent has become part of its corporate strategy over the past several months, as the company has pushed a steady rollout of safeguards and restrictions, including the suspension of numerous accounts associated with white supremacists, terrorists and other violent organizations.

In particular, the new rules ban violent threats or even "wishing for serious physical harm".

Hateful imagery, such as swastikas and other symbols, will be hidden behind a content warning in tweets that allows users the option of viewing it. "We consider hateful imagery to be logos, symbols or images whose objective is to promote hostility and malice against others based on their race, religion, disability, sexual orientation or ethnicity/national origin".

Twitter did not provide a list of other accounts that have been immediately affected, and the company did not respond to Ars' request for comment pre-publication.

Britain First leader Paul Golding, 35, and deputy leader Jayda Fransen, 31, are both facing charges in Belfast.

So @Twitter finally suspend Britain First - the day before social media cos appear at @CommonsHomeAffs.Why does it take a Parliamentary hearing to make them do the right thing?

In an internal email which was obtained by Wired.com, Twitter's head of safety policy in October emailed members of its Trust and Safety Council on new rules to promote free speech and curb violence and sexual harassment. The new rules will apply to accounts including those that affiliate themselves with organizations that "use or promote violence against civilians to further their causes".

Exceptions: However, the policies are not applicable to military or government entities.

Twitter said it had decided not to categorise the US Confederate flag as hateful imagery, citing its place in history.
