  • US pulls out of global compact on migration

"The New York Declaration contains numerous provisions that are inconsistent with US immigration and refugee policies and the Trump administration's immigration principles", a statement from the USA mission said.

Ms. Haley, a child of Indian immigrants, emphasized in the statement that "America is proud of our immigrant heritage and our longstanding moral leadership in providing support to migrant and refugee populations across the globe".

Haley said Trump made the decision, and emphasized that Americans should determine their own policies on immigration.

New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, all United Nations member states acknowledged that no one state can manage worldwide migration on its own.

The United States has chose to end participation in the UN process to develop a Global Compact on Migration (GCM).

The United States has been part of the talks since they began in April, the outcome of a political declaration in NY by all 193 members of the United Nations previous year in favor of protecting the rights of migrants and refugees by assuring their safe resettlement and access to employment and education.

World leaders and dignitaries from 193 United Nations member states adopted the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants in September 2016, paving the way for the global compact for migration. "We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter the country".

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres regretted the US decision, his spokesman said on Sunday, but expressed hope the United States might re-engage in the talks. "As such, it has the experience and expertise to help ensure that this process leads to a successful outcome".

"The United Nations should not miss this opportunity to improve the lives of millions of people throughout the world", Lajčák added. These commitments are known as the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants.

The withdrawal comes days before a global conference on migration that starts Monday in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Under Trump, the USA has taken hard line on immigration.

US AMBASSADOR NIKKI HALEY, on decisions over immigration policies.

More recently, the United States pulled out of the Paris-based culture and education body, UNESCO, accusing it of "anti-Israel bias".

She explained the motives behind the move, saying that such domestic policy matters as migration decisions "must always be made by Americans and Americans alone".

The US Embassy in the United Nations said that President Donald Trump is determined to be separated from the agreement process.
