Nintendo has given us an update on the latter angle, revealing that the system has shifted over ten million units since launch just nine months ago in early March.

Despite only being on sale since March, the Switch is already closing in on the lifetime sales milestone for the Wii U.

For comparison, the company's previous system the Wii U sold 13.56 million units over five years. The GameCube sold 21.7 million units in its seven-year lifespan, meaning if the Switch continues on its current trajectory - which is certainly unlikely - it will have overtaken the GameCube in under two years since its release.

Demand has been so high, in fact, that Nintendo had to revise its sales projections for first-year sales of the Switch.

For starters, the Switch is a simple concept that's well executed.

Nintendo HQ Visit

Starbreeze Studios have unveiled the release date for Payday 2 on the Nintendo Switch.

Fils-Aime previously told CNN Tech it was important for the console to have a consistent flow of new games - unlike the limited offerings made available to the Wii U. The Wii U, which was considered a flop, also lacked a clear user proposition. It's a portable game console! The unit is the first home console that can be played on a TV and also be taken instantly on the go, allowing players to experience their favourite games anytime, anywhere and with anyone. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released for the Nintendo Switch on April 28.

It'll be interesting to see what will come of this situation regarding the Switch when holiday season kicks into full force and when 2018 and all of its games roll out?

If there's one thing we can point to that's likely responsible for the unmitigated success of the Switch, it's the software lineup.

Here's Mario with a small portion of Nintendo's fortune. Fils-Aime said it's possible that the Switch will top the first-year sales of the Wii, if momentum remain strong through the holiday-shopping season.
