Israel's Strategic Affairs Ministry has placed the left-wing, California-based Jewish Voice for Peace and five other USA groups on a BDS blacklist.

The budget is the largest sum ever earmarked by Israel for the objective of combating BDS activities. It's aimed at "central figures" in "key boycott organizations" and doesn't distinguish between individuals based on their country of origin, ethnicity or religion.

The statement from Erdan said the NGOs being targeted were "the main boycott organizations which operate consistently and continuously against the state of Israel, while putting pressure on organizations, institutions and countries to boycott Israel".

Calling the move a shift from defence to offence, Erdan said, "The boycott organisations need to know that the state of Israel will act against them and not allow them to enter its territory to harm its citizens".

The blacklist names groups from the U.S., Europe, Chile and South Africa. "We will not be bullied by these attempts to punish us for a principled political stance that increasing numbers of Jews and non-Jews support worldwide". That role had been championed by Israeli think tanks such as the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs (JCPA) headed by former Foreign Ministry Director General Dr. Dore Gold and others including the Reut Institute. Unfortunately, the Israeli government is not willing to see beyond its contempt for a peaceful movement such as BDS, even when the group in question did so much to help their own during one of the most horrific periods of world history.

In 2009, in fact, the JCPA held its first comprehensive round table on de-legitimization, which was attended by senior government officials.

The Strategic Affairs Ministry became convinced that BDS was a national security problem and a direct assault on Israeli legitimacy as the nation State of the Jewish People.

Israel's obsession with targeting the BDS movement has caused it to ignore a group's long history of support for Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany.

The Ministry of Strategic Affairs acknowledged JCPA's efforts.

Rights groups criticised the law as "thought control" and noted that Israel also controls who enters the Palestinian, territories apart from one border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

"We have moved from defense to attack", Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan said in a statement, according to the Times of Israel.

Hugh Lanning, chair of the PSC, said in a statement: "This latest announcement should be a wakeup call for the United Kingdom government and all those who continue to describe Israel as a normal liberal democracy".

"It really shows how vague this idea of BDS is".

"The government finally gets it", Diker said.
