A North Korean missile crashed into one of its cities past year

That initial minute of boosted flight propelled the missile 39 kilometers away to Tokchon, a city of about 200,000 people in North Korea's interior, according to Panda and Schmerler's investigation.

In late April 2017, Pyongyang launched a Hwasong-12 intermediate-range ballistic missile that failed minutes after launch. A building in Chongsin-dong, Tokchon, which appeared to be a greenhouse, was severely damaged with a crater-like impact zone on the ground, believed to have been caused by the highly volatile liquid propellant of the missile, the magazine said, citing an anonymous U.S. official.

Satellite images from Google Earth and PlanetLabs published in The Diplomat appear to corroborate the source, showing damage from debris in a building complex located near a large group of other buildings. The Diplomat said that it was impossible to determine if there were any casualties, though the time of day and the location of the impact site meant the death toll was unlikely to be high, if any.

But it failed shortly after take-off, the Diplomat reports, before crashing down in the Chongsin-dong area of Tokchon, apparently damaging what looks like an agricultural or industrial building. The structural damage was independently confirmed by The Diplomat using publicly available satellite photos.

Since April, North Korea has continued to launch missiles, including two intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) over Japan. "A slight difference in trajectory may could have resulted in an even more catastrophic accident over a populated region".

The missile was once again launched in May and at this time it successfully completed the test.

The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley even explained in April that the US would conduct a military strike against North Korea if it tested an ICBM.

The global community is still unaware exactly what caused a massive explosion that devastated the city of Ryongchong in 2004, soon after then-North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il had passed through in his personal train.

Furthermore, North Korea had also earlier claimed that they were in possession of a missile that can reach all the way up to United States of America.
