  • Barry and Honey Sherman were found strangled inside their mansion on Dec. 15 2017

Police said Friday they believe Canadian drug-company billionaire businessman Barry Sherman and his wife were both murdered.

In a statement released shortly after the announcement, the Sherman family said they had anticipated the development.

Det-Sgt Susan Gomes said on Friday afternoon that police made the determination after six weeks of collecting evidence at the billionaire couple's Toronto home.

Gomes said the Shermans were found hanging by belts that were tied to a railing near an indoor pool in seated positions.

Police say the couple was found in the basement of their home by a real estate agent.

Gomes declined to give further details about a suspect or suspects, but said police were planning to interview a series of people.

The Sherman's family spoke out against this claim and promptly hired their own team of private investigators as well as former Chief Forensic Pathologist Dr. David Chiasson.

Those gumshoes believe the pair were killed two days before they were found, and Honey, 70, likely struggled with her killer, as she had cuts on her face and was found in a pool of her own blood, the outlet reports.

Canadian Business magazine recently estimated his worth at CAD$4.77 billion ($4.77 billion), making him the 15th richest person in the country.

The Toronto Police Services announced on Friday that Barry and Honey Sherman, who were found dead in their home in December, were in fact murdered.

The post-mortem examination concluded that both deaths were caused by "ligature neck compression", signalling a type of strangulation.

Mr Sherman was known for litigiousness and aggressive businesses practices as he developed Apotex Inc., which has a global workforce of about 11,000.

Private security and investigators replaced the police crime scene tape with commercial yellow "caution" tape.

Police said they have now turned the couple's home back to the family, which has hired private investigators to conduct a separate, independent investigation.

"The thought once came to my mind, why didn't they just hire someone to knock me off?"

Police sources had initially told media that they were considering the possibility of a murder-suicide - a declaration that the Sherman family vehemently rejected and called irresponsible.

The couple's public funeral took place on 21 December and was attended by many from Toronto's prominent social circles, as well as dignitaries like Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
