Bombardier wins United States trade case

  • Bombardier expected to lose US trade dispute: Canadian government source

For Bombardier, and Airbus, Moore said he thinks this means they'll sell a lot of C Series planes in the U.S.

Bombardier responded by saying the ruling was a victory for innovation, competition and the rule of law; adding the result would secure thousands of jobs in the U.S., Canada and the UK.

In response to today's decision, Delta said it was pleased the Commission had rejected "Boeing's anticompetitive attempt to deny US airlines and the USA traveling public access to the state-of-the-art 110-seat CS100 aircraft when Boeing offers no viable alternative".

"The threat of a new petition-which Boeing has not disclaimed-makes the partnership with Airbus to build a USA full assembly line a necessity regardless of how this case is resolved", the Montreal-based manufacturer wrote in a 20-page submission.

In response to the ITC ruling, Boeing said that it would continue to document any harm inflicted on itself or the aerospace US supply chain by illegal subsidies.

Delta argued that it wasn't interested in Boeing's smallest jet, the 737 Max 7, and the USA plane maker had offered it used Brazilian regional jets.

Analysts said Boeing's bid for help ultimatelyfell short because the company overreached, asserting an unsupported injury claim.

"Nothing is sweeter than a surprise, a surprise victory", Airbus Chief Executive Tom Enders said, promising to push ahead "full throttle" with the Alabama plans.

While speaking to business leaders and reporters on Thursday, Trump reiterated his stance that he favors bilateral trade deals over multilateral ones and said he may terminate Nafta - or he may not.

A U.S. trade body is due to make its final ruling on the Bombardier aircraft imports dispute, which could threaten around 1,000 jobs at its Belfast plant.

Boeing officials expressed "disappointment" with the ruling, while Bombardier applauded it. Bombardier has countered that Boeing benefits from its own subsidies in the US, which include federal contracts and tax breaks from state governments. Boeing argued that Bombardier had offered the CSeries to Delta "at absurdly low prices", forcing it to discount its 737 narrow-bodies to compete with the Canadian firm.

Bombardier, which employs more than 4,000 people in Belfast and contributes an estimated £400m to the Northern Ireland economy, said the C-Series jets were "critical" to its operations there. Bombardier and the European aerospace giant announced plans in October to give 50.01% control of the C Series program to Airbus as part of a strategic tie up.

Sky News' Ireland Correspondent David Blevins said the ruling "lifts the cloud completely for the 1,000 employees who feared for their jobs".

In a statement, the company added: "The C-Series development and production represent thousands of jobs in the US, Canada and the UK".

Boeing was little changed at $343.22, missing out on a defense-industry rally spurred by a report that the White House wants to increase defense spending more than 7 percent in the 2019 budget.

The decision Friday is a significant blow to Chicago-based Boeing and gives an unexpected boost to Airbus, Boeing's rival in the commercial airline market. "It is also a victory for US airlines and the USA travelling public".

"We always believed that the C Series, in order to reach its full potential, would need a very strategic partner and we do have a strategic partner in Airbus", he said.
