Sunderland are reportedly set to sign Chelsea youngster Jake Clarke-Slater on loan this month.

Sunderland were knocked out of the FA Cup yesterday after losing 2-0 away to Middlesbrough and now sit bottom of the Championship.

The Black Cats have consistently signed young defenders in recent seasons, with Donald Love, Tyias Browning and Brendan Galloway all arriving at the Stadium of Light - the latter two similarly penning temporary deals.

The Black Cats only have 22 points from 26 games. The 20-year-old will be Chris Coleman's first signing.

Clarke-Salter revealed that Coleman was the main reason he agreed to make the switch, claiming his "mind was made up then", after receiving the call from the manager.

He spent time on loan at Bristol Rovers last season and Chelsea are keen for him to pick up experience in the Championship this term. He has only played once for his parent club this season in the Carabao Cup where Antonio Conte's men comfortably beat Nottingham Forest 5-1 at Stamford Bridge.

The England Under-20 worldwide was part of that age group's World Cup-winning side in 2017.

Clarke-Salter was an unused substitute for Chelsea's 0-0 draw at Norwich in the FA Cup on Saturday.
